Mrs. Sherlock has been volunteering for this charity for a number of years now, and is looking for students to either organise a fundraiser or give hands on assistance during the summer break.
VZW Op Stap has been organising holidays for disabled people for over 20 years now. The holiday is two weeks (some stay only 1 week) usually in the beginning of July. The parents drop off their children at 09:00h and they are entertained and looked after until 17:00h. The age range this July was 12-50 and we had 17 disabled people over the 2 weeks.
The holidays usually take place in holiday camps with bungalows. During the day the parents are free to do what they want and volunteers work with the disabled group.
The VZW always needs funds and fundraisers are held throughout the year. It would be really nice if a fundraiser could be held on their behalf.
If you speak Dutch and you can miss a week of your holidays, you can always volunteer to look after the disabled persons. You do not need to have special knowledge about disabled people, everyone will be supported by the permanent team. You will be assigned with someone else to one "guest" and between 09:00-17:00 you entertain the person. All group activities are prepared e.g. swimming so you don't have to invent anything but you may have to be patient and creative and adapt the activity to the abilities of the person you are assigned to. The volunteers get free accommodation, 3 meals, and transportation to the site during the holiday. You can go for 1 week or 2 weeks. In the evening you are free to do what you want.
